Every morning I take the long way to the station. The bakery on the corner opens at six, and the smell of fresh bread follows me down the block.

This deep voice test measures your median speaking pitch in Hz and turns it into a deep voice score from 0 to 100. The score answers "how deep is my voice?" in plain terms: it is the percentage of adults in your chosen group, men or women, who speak at a higher pitch than you. A score of 75 means 75% of that group speak higher than you do.

How the deep voice score works

The score compares your median pitch with published norms from the Sydney Voice Lab's 2025 reference sheet: an average of 115 Hz for adult men, with a standard deviation of 21 Hz, and 199 Hz for adult women, with a standard deviation of 28 Hz. We assume pitch is spread in a bell curve around those averages, which is a simplification, then work out what share of the group speaks higher than you.

The five tiers are cut at the 10th, 30th, 70th and 90th percentiles:

TierDeep voice scoreMenWomen
Very deep90 to 100under 88 Hzunder 163 Hz

Light10 to 30126 to 142 Hz214 to 235 Hz
High0 to 10above 142 Hzabove 235 Hz

Pick the comparison group with the toggle. Comparing a typical female voice with men, or a typical male voice with women, gives a score that says more about the group than about you.

Norms vary between studies. A German population study of adults aged 40 to 79 found averages of about 112 Hz for men and 169 Hz for women, so an older woman may score deeper here than she would against women her own age. See our guide to average voice pitch for the full comparison.

Chad voice test: where the meme lines fall

If you came here from a "chad voice test" clip, the meme lines map onto this score like this. The original voicecel test calls voices under 85 Hz "Deep Voice Chad". For a man, 85 Hz scores about 92, which puts him among the deepest 8% or so of adult men. The "Chad" band from 85 to 100 Hz scores roughly 76 to 92. The 130 Hz voicecel line scores about 24, which still means about a quarter of men speak higher.

The voicecel test shows your result with those meme labels, renamed so none is an insult. Women can use the voicecel test for women, since the meme lines were drawn only for men.

Why your score might not match how deep you sound

Pitch is what this test measures, but listeners hear more than pitch. Resonance, shaped by the length of your vocal tract, also makes a voice sound big or small. A review of the research reports that after controlling for sex, pitch explained at most about 2% of the variation in body size, while formants, the resonance peaks of the voice, explained about 10%. A voice of average pitch can still sound deep.

Delivery matters too. Studies by David Puts and colleagues at Penn State found that a low male pitch made other men judge the speaker as more dominant, with a smaller effect on how attractive women found him. A related study found that less pitch variation predicted how physically dominant a man was judged to be. Those are averages from rated recordings, not a rule about how anyone should speak.

Getting a deep reading the honest way

  • Speak at normal volume. Louder speech reads higher: in the German study, men averaged about 112 Hz in conversation, 130 Hz in a raised "classroom" voice and 176 Hz when shouting.
  • Use your everyday voice. Pushing your pitch down gives a number you cannot keep, and forcing your voice too low can cause vocal fatigue and strain.
  • Test in a quiet room, at the same distance from the microphone each time.
  • Take a few readings and go by the typical one.

The deep voice test runs entirely in your browser. Your recording is never uploaded, stored or sent anywhere, and you do not need an account. It is meant for people 13 and older. Questions

How deep is my voice?
Your deep voice score answers that. It is the percentage of adults in your chosen group, men or women, who speak at a higher pitch than you. A score of 50 is exactly average, 70 or more puts you in the deep tier, and 90 or more means fewer than one adult in ten of that group speaks lower than you.
What Hz is a deep voice for a man?
Adult men average about 115 Hz in conversation, according to the Sydney Voice Lab. A median below about 104 Hz is deeper than 70% of men, and below about 88 Hz is deeper than 90%. On the voicecel meme scale, "Deep voice Chad" starts under 85 Hz, a reading only about 8% of adult men would get.
What Hz is a deep voice for a woman?
Adult women average about 199 Hz, according to the Sydney Voice Lab's 2025 norms. A median below about 184 Hz is deeper than 70% of women, and below about 163 Hz is deeper than 90%. Other studies report lower female averages, including about 169 Hz for women aged 40 to 79, so treat these cut points as approximate.
What is a chad voice test?
It is the popular name for the voicecel meme test, which labels voices under 85 Hz "Deep Voice Chad" and voices from 85 to 100 Hz "Chad". The lines came from a 2023 joke site, not research. Our voicecel test shows your result on that scale, and this deep voice test shows a plain percentile score instead.
Is a deeper voice more attractive?
Only a little, on average, and not in a simple way. A Penn State study found that a deep male voice affected how dominant other men judged a speaker much more than how attractive women found him. A 2020 study found a curved rather than straight-line link between male pitch and attractiveness ratings.
Can I make my voice deeper permanently?
You cannot change the length of your vocal folds or vocal tract, which set most of your pitch and resonance. You can change habits that push your voice up, such as speaking loudly or with tension in your throat and neck. Forcing your voice low can cause fatigue and strain, so work gently and see a professional for persistent problems.
